Wollongong Homeless Hub would like to thank all Emergency Services personnel who have sacrificed their time over the last few months to protect our community from the ongoing bushfire crisis affecting our country.
We are grateful to hear that family and staff directly affected and displaced during this crisis have been able to breathe a sigh of relief as they are now able to return home.
As a frontline service, we have been able to react immediately when demand increased for our services. During this crisis, we have met people who have found themselves accessing our homeless service for advice, support, advocacy and accommodation not knowing if they were going to become one of the many thousands of people who are homeless across our states.
The Christmas/ New Year period is normally a tough time for Wollongong Homeless Hub clients and this year had an added difficulty with increased demand on resources due to the bushfire crisis.
We are grateful that we have been able to assist people to travel back home, provide a tank of petrol or receive much needed medication and food parcels, Christmas donations of Opal cards, food vouchers and financial donations that would normally last a couple of months have now all been given out to those in need. We now need to work to replenish our resources and continue to provide support to those vulnerable in our community who rely on our service on a daily basis.
With many people donating to bushfire fundraisers and causes we are aware that people may have already committed to donating to those larger campaigns, if you are able to dig a little deeper to help a local service replenish our resources we would greatly appreciate it.
Donations can be made by clicking the following link or opal and food vouchers can be sent or delivered to 75-79 Keira street Wollongong 2500. http://www.wefh.org.au/donations/
